How the final grade calculator works
Your overall grade is a weighted average of the work you've already done and your final exam. If your final is worth w (as a fraction) and your current average is C, then to reach a target T you need:
Required final = (T − C × (1 − w)) ÷ w
For example, with an 88% going in, a final worth 30%, and a target of 90%, you'd need about a 94.7% on the final.
When the final isn't all you have left
That formula assumes your current grade already covers the whole course apart from the final. If you still have an ungraded project or essay, it quietly credits you for that work at your current average — and the number it gives you will be wrong.
By categorymode fixes this. List every category with its weight, score the ones that are graded, and leave the rest blank. It banks only the points you've actually earned and divides what's missing across the work that remains:
Required average = (T − points earned) ÷ (remaining weight ÷ 100)
Say homework (20%) came back at 92, your midterm (30%) at 85, and a project (20%) plus the final (30%) are still outstanding. You've banked 43.9 points of the 100 available, so to reach 90% you need to average 92.2% across the project and the final. The quick formula, treating your 87.8% average as the whole non-final half of the course, would have told you 95.1% — a different exam to study for.

Tips before your final
- Check your syllabus for the final's exact weight — it's often 20–40%.
- Use your true current average, not a single test score.
- If the number you need is impossible, ask early about extra credit or curves.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
In Quick mode, enter your current grade, how much the final is worth (its weight), and the overall grade you want. The calculator solves: required final = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.
What if I have assignments left besides the final?
Use By category mode. List every category in your syllabus with its weight, fill in scores for the work that's been graded, and leave the score blank for anything still outstanding. The calculator then tells you the average you need across everything that's left, instead of assuming the final is the only thing remaining.
What if the score I need is over 100%?
That means your target isn't reachable with the work you have left — it simply isn't weighted heavily enough. By category mode also shows the best grade you can still finish with. Try a lower target, or ask your instructor about extra credit.
What if I already have the grade locked in?
If the calculator shows you need 0% or less, you've already secured your target — even a zero on what's left keeps you at or above the grade you want.
Is my current grade the same as my final's weight?
No. 'Current grade' is your average so far across everything except the final. 'Weight' is how much the final counts toward your overall grade, usually shown in your syllabus.
Why do Quick mode and By category mode give different answers?
Quick mode treats your current grade as covering the entire course apart from the final. If some work is still ungraded, that assumption credits you for it at your current average. By category mode keeps ungraded work out of your average, so it's the accurate one whenever you have more than just the final left.
