The common minimum: 3.0
A 3.0 GPA is the most common stated minimum for graduate admissions. Competitive programs, however, often admit students with GPAs of 3.5 and above, and top programs can average well over 3.7.
Your major GPA matters
Many programs weigh your GPA in your last two years or in your major more heavily than your overall GPA. A strong upward trend or a high major GPA can offset a weaker start.
Offsetting a lower GPA
Strong test scores, research experience, relevant work, and compelling recommendation letters can outweigh a GPA slightly below the cutoff. Some applicants also take post-baccalaureate courses to demonstrate they can handle graduate-level work.
