Academic policies at K-State

Graduating with honors

K-State's thresholds are among the highest of any public university — its cum laude line of 3.750 is where several schools set summa. The bands run 3.750–3.849 cum laude, 3.850–3.949 magna, and 3.950 or above summa. You need a minimum of 60 undergraduate hours completed at K-State, with at least 42 of those in graded courses. Only undergraduate coursework counts.

Dean's List

K-State requires a term GPA of at least 3.75. K-State calls this Semester Honors rather than a Dean's List. You need a 3.75 semester GPA across at least 12 graded hours.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need a semester and cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better. Falling below either triggers academic warning, which clears once both are back to 2.00. A GPA under 1.00 in your very first semester results in dismissal, and the cumulative GPA needed to avoid dismissal later rises in steps as you earn more credit hours.

Repeating a course

Retaking a course removes your original grade from your cumulative GPA and marks it retaken on your transcript — but the new grade always counts, even if it is worse than the first. You get this reset once per course, and only for your first five retaken courses across your K-State career.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

K-State's version is A/Pass/Fail: an A stays an A, a B, C, or D becomes Pass with no effect on your GPA, and an F stays an F. It covers free electives and upper-division general-distribution courses, but not courses required by name in your major, and you cannot use it in your first semester or while on probation. Total pass hours cannot exceed one-sixth of your degree.
