Georgia Tech does not use cum laude / magna / summa naming. It awards Honor, High Honor, and Highest Honor on cumulative GPA, and you must have earned at least 60 semester credit hours at Georgia Tech, excluding remedial coursework, to qualify for any of them. Honors shown at Commencement are tentative because they are computed before final grades are certified.
Dean's List
Georgia Tech requires a term GPA of at least 3.00. You also need at least 12 credit hours taken on a letter-grade basis that semester, must be in good academic standing, and can have no Incomplete grades.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. A term or cumulative GPA below 2.00 moves you to Academic Warning, which caps your course load at 16 credit hours. A term GPA below 1.0 on at least 6 attempted hours moves you to Probation, capped at 14 hours. Continued failure to reach a 2.0 can lead to dismissal, requiring you to sit out at least one term before readmission.
Repeating a course
Grade Substitution lets undergraduates repeat up to two Georgia Tech courses in which they earned a D or F. Each course can be substituted only once, must be repeated within one year, and the original grade is excluded from your GPA — though both attempts stay on your transcript. A course is ineligible if you were found responsible for academic misconduct in it.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Courses taken pass/fail or audit are excluded from your GPA entirely — only standard letter grades contribute quality points.
