Academic policies at OU

Graduating with honors

HonorMinimum cumulative GPA
Cum laude3.60
Magna cum laude3.75
Summa cum laude3.90

Effective Spring 2024, the bands are 3.60–3.74 cum laude, 3.75–3.89 magna cum laude, and 3.90–4.00 summa cum laude on the Norman campus. You need at least 60 hours taken at OU and no Academic Integrity actions on your record.

Dean's List

OU requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. OU's Dean's Honor Roll generally requires a term GPA of 3.5 or better — 3.0 in the Gallogly College of Engineering and the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy — across at least 12 letter-graded credit hours. A separate President's Honor Roll requires a 4.0 term GPA.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Your required retention GPA depends on hours attempted: 1.70 for 0–29 hours and 2.00 for 30 or more. Landing in the 1.70–1.99 range within your first 29 hours puts you on academic notice rather than probation.

Repeating a course

As of January 1, 2025, OU lets undergraduates repeat a course up to four total attempts, with only the highest grade counting toward your GPA while all attempts remain on the transcript. A one-time Academic Reprieve or Academic Renewal is also available if you have since earned a 2.00 GPA with no grade below C across at least 12 hours, and at least three years have passed.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

P/NP and S/U grades are neutral in your GPA — neither passing nor failing marks under these options move it. Availability for a given course depends on program-specific rules.
