Academic policies at CMU

Graduating with honors

Carnegie Mellon publishes no university-wide Latin honors standard. Graduation honors, like most academic standing decisions, are set by each individual college — Dietrich, Engineering, Mellon College of Science, Computer Science, Tepper, and Fine Arts each maintain their own criteria, so check with your college directly.

Dean's List

Carnegie Mellon sets Dean's List criteria at the college level rather than through the university registrar, so the threshold depends on which college you are enrolled in.

Good academic standing

CMU's suspension policy states that academic suspension is imposed by the student's college or academic department, so minimum-GPA and probation standards are set college by college rather than as one university-wide number.

Repeating a course

Carnegie Mellon does not offer grade forgiveness. When you repeat a course, every grade you earned is recorded on your transcript and factored into your QPA.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

Undergraduates may take one free-elective course Pass/Fail, unless the course, department, or your home college precludes it. Grades A through D are recorded as a passing P with credit, while anything below D is recorded as a non-passing N with no credit.

CMU calls it QPA, not GPA

Carnegie Mellon's policies refer to your grade point average as QPA, for Quality Point Average. It is the same underlying calculation — credit-weighted average of grade points — just different terminology on official CMU pages.
