Academic policies at Kentucky

Graduating with honors

These cutoffs apply if you complete at least three years, or 90 credit hours, of coursework at UK. With two to three years — 60 to 89 hours — you need a GPA 0.2 points higher than each threshold shown. The Law, Pharmacy, and Dentistry colleges use their own separate criteria for their degrees.

Dean's List

Kentucky requires a term GPA of at least 3.60. Dean's List is set by each college rather than centrally, but colleges including Arts and Sciences and the Pigman College of Engineering require a semester GPA of 3.6 or higher across at least 12 credit hours of graded coursework, with Pass/Fail hours excluded from the 12.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You are placed on academic probation if your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, or if you post two consecutive semesters with a term GPA below 2.0 even while your cumulative GPA stays at or above 2.0.

Repeating a course

UK's Repeat Option lets you retake up to three different courses, once each, across your entire undergraduate career. Only the grade, credit hours, and quality points from the second attempt count toward your GPA and degree credit, though the original stays visible on your transcript. It cannot be used on a course with an academic-integrity grade, and once you have earned a degree, courses taken before it can no longer be repeated under the option.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

Once you have completed more than 29 credit hours and are not on probation, you can take up to four elective courses Pass/Fail. These credits count toward graduation but are excluded from your GPA, and you must lock in your grading option within three weeks of the semester's start.
