Academic policies at Clemson

Graduating with honors

HonorMinimum cumulative GPA
Cum laude3.70
Magna cum laude3.85
Summa cum laude3.95

Clemson's cutoffs sit noticeably higher than most public universities — its cum laude threshold of 3.70 is where some schools set magna cum laude.

Dean's List

Clemson requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a term GPA of 3.5 or higher while completing at least 12 graded semester hours; Pass/No Pass coursework does not count toward that 12-hour minimum.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Falling below a 2.0 cumulative GPA places you on academic probation, and a semester GPA below 1.5 triggers an academic alert regardless of your cumulative. While on probation you stay eligible by earning a 2.4 term GPA on at least 12 graded hours, or by meeting a cumulative benchmark of 1.85 up to 89 hours and 2.00 beyond.

Repeating a course

Clemson's Academic Forgiveness Policy lets you remove the GPA impact of up to two courses graded D or F — but forgiving a course also removes those earned credit hours, so weigh it against your graduation plan. It applies once per course, never to Pass/No Pass courses or coursework before Fall 2003, and cannot be reversed or invoked after you graduate.

Academic Renewal after time away

If you left Clemson while not in good academic standing and stayed away for two or more academic years, you can petition for academic renewal. If granted, your prior GPA deficit is excluded from future calculations — but you also lose the ability to count previously earned Clemson credit toward your degree. Permanently dismissed students are not eligible.
