Academic policies at South Carolina

Graduating with honors

The bands run 3.500–3.749 cum laude, 3.750–3.949 magna cum laude, and 3.950–4.00 summa cum laude. You need at least 60 credit hours earned in residence at USC Columbia.

Dean's List

South Carolina requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a GPA of 3.50 or higher across a minimum of 12 credit hours in a semester to make the Dean's Honor List.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Your Total Institutional GPA must be 2.00 or higher at the end of any semester. While on probation you must meet a sliding minimum based on hours attempted — 1.500 at 12–35 hours, 1.800 at 36–71 — to avoid suspension, with a 2.50 semester GPA reprieve standard once you have attempted 72 or more hours.

Repeating a course

USC's Grade Forgiveness policy lets you retake up to two courses graded D+, D, F, or WF taken Fall 2007 or later. Both grades stay on your transcript, but only the second counts toward your GPA. Note that removing the original attempt's quality points can affect Latin-honors eligibility, you cannot use it after earning your first bachelor's degree, and once applied it cannot be reversed.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

As long as your semester and cumulative GPA are at least 2.00, you can take free-elective courses Pass-Fail, up to eight courses across your undergraduate career.
