Johns Hopkins does not award Latin honors to undergraduates at all — no cum laude, magna, or summa. Instead it awards university-wide General Honors for a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better, and each department sets its own Departmental Honors standard (Mechanical Engineering uses a 3.50 cumulative GPA, Computer Science 3.75 in required courses). Dean's List
Johns Hopkins requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a term GPA of 3.50 or better in a program of at least 14 credits, with at least 12 of those graded. A reduced-load version exists for students with an approved Student Disability Services accommodation.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need at least 12 completed credits and a term GPA of 2.0 or better each semester. Falling below either triggers probation, and a term GPA below 1.0 — or fewer than 6 credits — can mean suspension without a prior probation semester.
Repeating a course
Hopkins allows genuine grade replacement. You can retake a course you earned a C+ or lower in, and only the retaken grade counts toward your GPA — the original grade and credits are excluded, though both attempts remain on your transcript with an R notation. A third attempt needs your advising office's approval.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
You can take one course per semester as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, plus one across all summer terms. S/U grades have no effect on your GPA, with S corresponding to a C− or better. The election deadline is the end of the eleventh week.
Hopkins does not calculate class rank
Johns Hopkins does not compute class rank at all, so it cannot be provided to you or to outside parties such as employers or graduate schools — which is also why its honors are GPA-based rather than percentile-based.
