These are College of Arts and Science bands, NYU's largest undergraduate college. They are percentile bands recalculated each year from the preceding year's graduating classes, not fixed GPA cutoffs. You also need at least 64 credits earned through CAS, GSAS, or select Tisch departments, plus a clean conduct record. NYU's other colleges — Stern, Tandon, Steinhardt, Gallatin and the rest — set their own criteria, so check your school.
Dean's List
NYU requires a term GPA of at least 3.65. This is the CAS standard: a 3.65 or higher average for the academic year across at least 28 graded credits, with no Incomplete or N grades outstanding when the list is compiled. Other NYU schools publish their own thresholds.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. In CAS you are in good standing as long as both your cumulative and semester GPA stay at or above 2.0. If either drops below, you receive a Notice of Concern. Other NYU schools define their own thresholds.
Repeating a course
CAS offers no grade replacement: if you repeat a course, both grades are recorded and both count in your GPA, and you earn no additional credit the second time. You may repeat a given course only once, and no more than two courses total across your undergraduate career.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
In CAS you may elect Pass/Fail for one course per term, up to 32 credits across your undergraduate career, electing before the end of the 14th week. A P is excluded from your GPA but an F still counts against it. Pass/Fail cannot be used for major, minor, or Core Curriculum requirements.
