UW sets no fixed GPA cutoff. Each year the Honors Committee sets a threshold separately for every school so that roughly the top 10% of that unit's graduating class qualifies overall. For Autumn 2025 through Summer 2026 the College of Arts and Sciences cutoffs were 3.91 for cum laude, 3.97 for magna, and 4.00 for summa — your own cutoff depends on your college and graduation year.
Dean's List
UW requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a quarterly GPA of 3.50 or higher across at least 12 numerically graded credits. There is also an Annual Dean's List for holding a 3.50 across 12 or more graded credits every quarter of the year. S/NS credits do not count toward the 12-credit minimum because they are not numerically graded.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00. Falling below in your very first quarter produces an academic alert; after that it means academic warning, and failing to recover leads to academic drop from the University.
Repeating a course
UW does not erase your original grade. With department approval you can repeat a course once, and both the original and new grade count in your cumulative GPA, though you earn credit only once. A third or later attempt requires special registration, and grades from those attempts are excluded from your GPA.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
UW's option is Satisfactory/Non-Satisfactory. Your instructor still assigns a numeric grade and the registrar converts 2.0 or higher to S and anything lower to NS. Neither affects your GPA. You can register for up to 20 S/NS credits at a time, and no more than 25 may count toward your degree.
Eligibility for baccalaureate honors
Latin honors apply only to your first bachelor's degree. You need at least 90 UW residence credits, and at least 60 of those must come from numerically graded rather than S/NS coursework.
