Academic policies at U-M
Graduating with honors
U-M's College of LSA awards distinction by class rank, not a fixed GPA. Highest Distinction goes to the top 3% of the class, High Distinction to the top 10% but below the top 3%, and Distinction to the top 25% but below the top 10%. The GPA ranges are set each May from that year's graduating cohorts and then used for the May, August, and December classes. You must complete at least 58 credits in residence, at least 45 of them graded, to be eligible.
Dean's List
LSA does not maintain a Dean's List. It instead awards a University Honors designation for any term with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, taken across a minimum of 14 credit hours including at least 12 graded (A–E). Some other U-M colleges, such as Engineering, do publish a Dean's List.
James B. Angell Scholars
Students who earn an all-A record (only A+, A, or A− grades) for two or more consecutive terms are named James B. Angell Scholars, taking at least 14 credits each term with at least 12 graded A–E. Any grade outside A+, A, A−, CR, P, S, W, or Y breaks the streak.
