Academic policies at UMN

Graduating with honors

HonorMinimum cumulative GPA
Cum laude3.50
Magna cum laude3.666
Summa cum laude3.75

These minimums are based on your final 60 graded credits taken at the Twin Cities campus, so transfer credits do not count, and the same thresholds apply campus-wide. You also need to complete an honors thesis and meet University Honors Program requirements.

Dean's List

UMN requires a term GPA of at least 3.666. You make the Dean's List for a semester with a term GPA of 3.666 or higher while completing at least 12 credits on the A–F grading system. Every college and campus publishes this list each term.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You are in good standing as long as both your term and cumulative GPA are at or above 2.000. If either drops below, you are placed on academic warning — Minnesota retired the term probation in 2024 — and you are suspended only if both are still below 2.000 at the end of your warning semester.

Repeating a course

As an undergraduate you can repeat a course only once, though your college can grant exceptions. Both attempts stay on your transcript and the credits count once toward your degree, but only the grade from your most recent attempt counts in your GPA.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

The S-N option keeps a course out of your GPA entirely: both S, equivalent to a C− or better, and N carry 0.00 grade points and are excluded from the calculation. You must declare S-N or A–F at registration and cannot switch after the end of the second week.

No A+ or D− grades

Minnesota uses A = 4.000, A− = 3.667, B+ = 3.333, down to F = 0.000, but does not award an A+ or a D− outside the Law School. There is no way to earn above 4.000 on a course.

One free late withdrawal

Once during your undergraduate career you can withdraw from a course without documentation or college approval, any time up through the last day of instruction.
