UT Austin calls these Honors, High Honors, and Highest Honors rather than cum laude, magna, and summa, and awards them on class rank within your own college — not a single university-wide GPA. Each of the 13 colleges sets its own minimum GPA floor beneath university caps of 20%, 10%, and 4% of the May graduating class. You must complete at least 60 semester hours in residence, and only in-residence coursework counts toward the GPA used.
Dean's List
UT Austin requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. UT Austin calls this the University Honors list rather than a Dean's List. You need at least 45 grade points and a semester GPA of at least 3.50 on courses completed in residence, with no incomplete grades. It is based on that single semester's work.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need a cumulative University GPA of at least 2.00 to stay off academic warning. Once on warning, the dismissal threshold rises with hours undertaken: below 1.50 under 15 hours, 1.70 at 15–44 hours, 1.85 at 45–59 hours, and 2.00 at 60 or more.
Repeating a course
UT Austin has no grade replacement policy. If you repeat a course, every attempt still counts toward your cumulative GPA — the official grade shown is simply the most recent one. Several colleges, including McCombs, Moody, Cockrell Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Natural Sciences, also bar you from repeating a course for credit once you have earned a C− or better.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
A grade of D− or better earns the symbol CR; anything lower is an F. No more than two courses per semester may be taken this way, and colleges cap total pass/fail hours separately. Courses taken on the CR basis are excluded entirely from your GPA.

Because honors are capped by percentage of the class, these are floors rather than guarantees — the GPA actually needed is often higher.
