Graduating with honors
| Honor | Basis | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Summa cum laude | Top ~3% of your college's class | — |
| Magna cum laude | Top ~7% | — |
| Cum laude | Top ~12% | — |
UIUC sets no fixed university-wide cutoff. Each college sets its own College Latin Honors cutoffs every term based on where your GPA ranks within that term's graduating class in your college. As an example, Liberal Arts and Sciences set its December 2024 through August 2025 cutoffs at 4.00 for summa, 3.98 for magna, and 3.94 for cum laude — check your own college for your term's figures.
Dean's List
Dean's List is awarded each semester to students whose semester GPA places them in roughly the top 20% of their college, and each college sets the exact numeric cutoff — LAS used 3.95 for 2025–2026. You need at least 12 semester hours taken for a letter grade that term.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You are in good standing as long as both your cumulative and semester GPA stay at or above 2.0. Falling below places you on Academic Warning, and a semester GPA below 1.0 — or failing the terms of an existing warning — can lead to dismissal.
Repeating a course
UIUC has no blanket grade-replacement policy for undergraduates. Per the Student Code, when you repeat a course the grades from all attempts are factored into your GPA, not just the most recent.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Credit/No Credit coursework does not count toward your GPA, though the hours still count toward your total credits and degree progress. You need a D− or better to earn CR, and CR/NC grades are never converted back to letter grades.
Bronze Tablet honors are changing in 2030
Bronze Tablet currently requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 plus a rank in the top 3% of your college's graduating class, which in practice has meant 3.99–4.00 in LAS. Starting with Summer 2030 graduates, UIUC replaces the percentile rule with a flat requirement: a 4.0 cumulative GPA plus at least 30 UIUC credit hours taken for a letter grade.
