Academic policies at Penn State

Graduating with honors

Penn State awards distinction by class rank, not a fixed GPA. Baccalaureate candidates in the top 12% of their college's graduating class who also hold a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 and have earned at least 60 credits at the University graduate with distinction. That 12% is split into the top 2% summa cum laude, the next 4% magna cum laude, and the next 6% cum laude. Because the cutoffs are set from prior graduates' GPAs each September, the GPA needed for a given level shifts year to year.
