Academic policies at Harvard
Graduating with honors
Harvard sets no fixed GPA cutoff for Latin honors. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences recalculates the threshold for each tier every year from that year's graduating class, with summa cum laude historically capped near the top 5%, magna near the top 15%, and cum laude near the top 30%. For an honor "in field" you also need an honors thesis recommendation from your concentration; students with high GPAs but no thesis recommendation may instead qualify for cum laude for the overall record. Because the numbers move annually, check the current FAS figures rather than any published cutoff.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Of the 128 credits needed to graduate, at least 84 must be taken for a letter grade, and Satisfactory is the only non-letter grade that can count toward that 84. Starting with the Class of 2029 all four General Education courses must be letter-graded.
