Academic policies at Nebraska

Graduating with honors

UNL sets no university-wide Latin honors scale — each college sets its own tiers and naming. These are the College of Arts and Sciences cutoffs, measured at the end of the term prior to graduation with your last 48 hours as a declared major. Note that the thesis path carries materially lower GPA requirements than the non-thesis path.

Dean's List

Dean's List criteria are set per college rather than university-wide. In Arts and Sciences you need a minimum 3.700 semester GPA and 12 completed credit hours, not counting Pass/No Pass or transfer credit, plus full-time enrollment by the census date.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Good standing requires both a term and cumulative GPA above 2.00. Academic Warning follows a GPA below that, and dismissal thresholds depend on hours attempted — below 1.00 under 19 hours, 1.75 at 19–45 hours, or 2.00 at 46 and above — or three consecutive semesters on warning.

Repeating a course

UNL's course-repeat rule counts only your most recent grade toward your cumulative GPA when you retake a course previously graded below a C. Separately, a one-time Academic Bankruptcy lets you remove an entire semester's grade points from your cumulative GPA if you have since completed 15 hours at a 3.0 or 30 hours at 2.5, though it will not restore satisfactory-progress calculations for financial aid.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

Pass/No Pass requires a grade of C or better to pass, and neither P nor N affects your GPA. You are capped at 24 total Pass credit hours as an undergraduate, and must elect P/N grading by the end of the eighth week.
