UW–Madison does not use cum laude, magna, or summa titles. If your cumulative GPA lands in the top 20% of your graduating class you earn Graduated with Distinction, and you need at least 60 completed residence credits. Highest Distinction is awarded only in Agricultural and Life Sciences, Human Ecology, and Pharmacy. These cutoffs are recalculated for every graduating class rather than fixed in advance.
Dean's List
You need at least 12 graded degree credits in a semester to be considered, but there is no university-wide GPA cutoff — each school or college sets its own semester GPA requirement, so the number depends on your school.
Good academic standing
UW–Madison sets no university-wide minimum GPA for good standing. Your school, college, or program sets the threshold you must maintain, and falling below it places you on academic probation.
Repeating a course
UW–Madison does not offer grade forgiveness. If you repeat a course, every grade you earn is included in your GPA and both attempts remain on your record, though you receive degree credit only once.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Some courses can be taken Pass/Fail, recorded as S or U, and neither is used in computing your GPA. Other courses use Credit/No Credit instead, where a CR counts toward degree credits but carries no grade points and so does not affect your GPA.
An unusual grading scale with no C− or D+
UW–Madison grades A = 4.0, AB = 3.5, B = 3.0, BC = 2.5, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. The half-step grades are AB and BC rather than plus/minus, and the scale jumps straight from D to F with no C− or D+.
