Academic policies at WVU

Graduating with honors

These apply to your overall GPA, combining WVU coursework with any transferred college credit. The commencement program uses your GPA through the semester before your last, so your final diploma designation can differ. One critical catch: WVU states that students who received academic forgiveness are not eligible to graduate with honors — so check with the registrar before using a forgiveness option if honors matter to you.

Dean's List

WVU requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need at least a 3.5 GPA for the term across a minimum of 12 graded credit hours, with no incomplete or unreported grades. A 4.0 earns the President's List instead, and only your highest honor for the term appears on your transcript.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Falling below a 2.0 overall GPA at the end of a fall or spring term puts you on Academic Notice the first time and Probation the second. If your GPA stays below 2.0 for three regular terms in total, you are placed on Academic Suspension.

Repeating a course

WVU's D/F Repeat policy lets you retake a course where you earned a D or F, but only your first attempt at that course is eligible. The original grade is excluded from your GPA and marked E on your transcript. Weigh this against the honors rule above — WVU bars students who received academic forgiveness from graduating with honors, so confirm with the registrar how your specific repeat is classified.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

As a degree-seeking student with at least 15 completed credit hours and a 2.0 GPA, you can take up to 4 credit hours per term and 18 total pass/fail — but only free electives, not courses counting toward your major, minor, gen-ed, or language requirements. A P does not affect your GPA, but an F does.
