BYU uses no fixed GPA cutoffs — it ranks each graduating class by GPA, using whichever is lower of your BYU GPA or your overall cumulative GPA. You also need at least 45 credit hours completed in residence at BYU to qualify for any of the three.
Dean's List
BYU requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. BYU's Dean's List is not just a GPA cutoff: you need a 3.5 or better for the semester, at least 14 credit hours earned that semester, and a rank in the top 5% of your college.
Repeating a course
As of Winter 2026, repeating a BYU course means only your most recent attempt's grade and credit hours count toward your GPA — earlier attempts stay on your transcript marked RPT but no longer affect it. You can repeat a course up to three times, and an official withdrawal counts as one of those attempts.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
You can take courses Credit/No Credit instead of for a letter grade, and neither a CR nor an NC affects your GPA in either direction.
BYU's scale is not the usual 4.0 scale
BYU does not use the standard .3/.7 plus-minus increments. A B+ is worth 3.4 rather than 3.3, a C+ is 2.4, and a D+ is 1.4. BYU also grades failing work as an E rather than an F — still 0.0 grade points — and awards no A+. A calculator assuming the standard scale will give BYU students the wrong number.
