Academic policies at Utah
Graduating with honors
| Honor | Minimum cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.50 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.70 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.90 |
These are the university-wide baseline bands, but each college sets its own final cutoffs every year from the graduating class — and those often run much higher, in some colleges above 3.9 just for cum laude. Check your college's published Honors GPA range for your term. You need at least 60 semester credit hours at the U, with 50 or more bearing letter grades; transfer credit and credit by exam do not count.
Dean's List
Utah requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You qualify with a 3.5 GPA across at least 12 graded credit hours in a term as a full-time student, or a 3.5 across 6 to 11.5 graded hours if you are part-time.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Falling below a 2.0 cumulative GPA moves you into Academic Warning. If both your cumulative and most recent term GPA are below 2.0 you move to Probation, and continued shortfalls lead to Suspension or Dismissal.
Repeating a course
You can retake a course you have taken before at the U, and only your last grade counts toward your GPA — though the credit hours count once toward graduation. You are generally limited to two attempts at any course; a third requires meeting with your advisor first.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
You can take up to 15 credit hours as Credit/No Credit. CR/NC grades do not affect your GPA, but the option is not allowed in Writing 1010, Writing 2010, Honors courses, or classes counting toward your major.
The published baseline understates what you actually need
Because each college recalculates its real Latin honors cutoffs every commencement cycle, they routinely land well above the 3.5 / 3.7 / 3.9 baseline. Treat those numbers as a floor, not a target, and look up your college's Honors GPA Ranges table for your graduation term.
