Academic policies at UGA

Graduating with honors

HonorMinimum cumulative GPA
Cum laude3.60
Magna cum laude3.75
Summa cum laude3.90

These cutoffs have been in effect since fall 2018 and apply to your overall GPA for all college-level work attempted, including transfer credit, going into your last semester. Final honors are confirmed once your last semester's grades post. A perfect 4.00 earns the additional First Honor Graduate distinction.

Dean's List

UGA requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a 3.5 GPA or higher on 14 or more credit hours in a single semester. Earning a U grade in a Pass/Fail course that semester disqualifies you for that term.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above, and at least a 2.0 to graduate. If your GPA stays below 2.0 for two or more consecutive terms you are placed on Academic Probation and must earn at least a 2.25 term GPA while working back to a 2.0.

Repeating a course

UGA does not offer ordinary grade replacement. Credit is awarded only once and the higher grade satisfies the requirement, but both attempts remain on your transcript and in your GPA. Academic Renewal exists only for undergraduates readmitted after at least five calendar years away, and is not a general forgiveness tool.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

S and U grades, used in a limited set of professional, seminar, or graduate-level courses, are excluded entirely from GPA calculations. Undergraduates with sophomore standing and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 can elect Pass/Fail for certain courses; earning a U that way disqualifies you from Dean's List for the term.
