Academic policies at Emory

Graduating with honors

HonorBasisMinimum GPA
Summa cum laudeTop 5% of the graduating class
Magna cum laudeNext 10%
Cum laudeNext 15%

Emory College sets Honors in Course by class rank rather than a published GPA cutoff. The Registrar calculates the actual GPA range each May from that year's graduating class, and it applies through the following summer and fall. There is no fixed number to target — aim for the top 30% of your class.

Dean's List

Emory College has not published a Dean's List since Fall 2024, dropping the recognition from Spring 2025 onward in favour of graduation-time Honors in Course. The Goizueta Business School still maintains its own separate Dean's List.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA and a 2.00 in each enrolled term. Falling short triggers Academic Warning and an intervention plan, with continued shortfalls leading to suspension or dismissal.

Repeating a course

Emory offers none. If you repeat a course, both the original and the repeated grade count in your GPA and the original stays on your transcript. You may attempt to pass any given course no more than three times.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

The Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory option covers up to 20 credit hours toward graduation, with a D or better earning the S. It cannot be used for general education requirements or any Goizueta Business School course, and you must lock in your grading basis by the 43rd instructional day.
