MSU does not use cum laude, magna, or summa labels. It has two tiers, With Honor and With High Honor, awarded to the top 20% of each graduating class. The Provost's Office recalculates the cutoff every year; the figures above apply to the Spring, Summer, and Fall 2026 terms. Transfer students need at least 50 credits earned at MSU to qualify.
Dean's List
MSU requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a term GPA of at least 3.50 across 12 or more credits counting toward your undergraduate program, graded on the numerical 0.0–4.0 system. It appears on your official transcript.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. A cumulative GPA below 2.00 at the end of a semester places you on probation for one semester. You return to good standing if your cumulative GPA is back to 2.00 or higher by the end of it.
Repeating a course
MSU replaces rather than averages: when you retake a course, only the most recent grade and credits count toward your cumulative GPA, though the original attempt stays visible on your transcript. You can repeat any individual course at most twice, and no more than 20 credits total across all courses.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
MSU's Pass-No Grade option is available only in specific pre-approved courses, mostly non-credit or field-experience ones. Because MSU's GPA is computed only from numerically graded courses, a P or N does not factor into it at all.
