Academic policies at Alabama

Graduating with honors

HonorMinimum cumulative GPA
Cum laude3.50
Magna cum laude3.70
Summa cum laude3.90

Cum laude covers 3.5 up to but not including 3.7, magna cum laude 3.7 up to but not including 3.9, and summa cum laude 3.9 and above. You need at least 45 semester hours completed at UA to qualify.

Dean's List

Alabama requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a term GPA of at least 3.5 across a minimum of 12 credit hours in a fall, spring, or summer semester. Students who reach a 4.0 are additionally named to the President's List.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You are in good standing once your cumulative GPA is 2.0 or higher. Below that you are placed on Academic Warning as long as you stay within your class level's Scholastic Progress Standard — 1.50 for freshmen, 1.70 for sophomores, 1.90 for juniors, and 2.00 for seniors.

Repeating a course

UA does not remove a repeated course's original grade from your GPA. Only the credit hours from your most recent attempt count toward earned hours, but all attempts are averaged into your cumulative GPA. Separately, a one-time Academic Bankruptcy lets a currently enrolled student wipe an entire past term, converting all its grades to W — usable once per academic career, and not for the current or immediately preceding term.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

As a sophomore, junior, or senior with a 2.0 or higher GPA you can take elective-only courses Pass/Fail, up to four courses or 12 credit hours, limited to one per fall, spring, and summer term. A P does not affect your GPA, but an F earned under the option does count against it.
