Academic policies at CU Boulder
Graduating with honors

CU Boulder has no campus-wide Latin honors cutoff — honors are set college by college. The figures above are the College of Arts and Sciences thresholds, and the GPA alone is not enough: you must also write and defend an honors thesis judged by a faculty committee, and only about 7–8% of each graduating class earns one. The Leeds School of Business instead uses a GPA-only system under different names (see below).
Dean's List
Dean's List thresholds are set per college rather than campus-wide, and all require at least 12 CU Boulder credit hours on a letter-grade basis that semester. Arts and Sciences requires a 3.750 semester GPA, Engineering and Applied Science requires 3.600, and Leeds Business requires 3.60.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Falling below a 2.000 cumulative CU GPA places you on Academic Warning. Failing to return to a 2.000 cumulative GPA — or to earn at least a 2.300 term GPA while on warning — leads to Academic Suspension, which is permanently noted on your transcript.
Repeating a course
Grade Replacement lets undergraduates retake a course in which they earned a C−, D+, D, D−, or F. If the new grade is equal or better it is automatically substituted into your GPA, and the old credit-hour cap on the policy was removed in 2022. Pass/fail, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, and audited courses are not eligible, and both attempts stay visible on your transcript.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Under the older Pass/Fail option a P or P+ does not affect your GPA, but an F does. Since Fall 2022 most undergraduate courses instead use Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading, where neither an S nor a U affects your GPA — though only an S earns degree credit.
Leeds School of Business awards Distinction instead
Leeds undergraduates graduate With Distinction (cumulative CU GPA of at least 3.750 but below 3.900) or With High Distinction (3.900 or higher). This route is GPA-only with no thesis required, but you need at least 60 semester hours earned at CU Boulder.
