UConn's GPA thresholds look unusually low, but the GPA alone does not qualify you — you must also rank in your school's top quartile, top 15%, or top 5% respectively, and that rank cutoff is recalculated for each graduating class. You need at least 54 calculable UConn credits.
Dean's List
UConn requires a term GPA of at least 3.00. The full-time semester Dean's List requires at least 12 calculable credits, no grade below C and no U grade in any course, a 3.0 semester GPA, and a class rank in your school's upper quartile that semester. A separate annual Part-Time Dean's List has its own requirements.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You are placed on academic notice if your semester or cumulative GPA drops below 2.0, and removed once both reach 2.0. Two consecutive fall or spring semesters below 2.0 normally triggers dismissal, unless you earn at least a 2.3 semester GPA in that second semester.
Repeating a course
When you repeat a course you earn credit once, and only the most recent attempt's grade counts toward your GPA — the earlier grade stays on your transcript but is excluded from the calculation. Note that this applies even if the second attempt is lower than the first.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
If you are not on academic notice you can place up to 12 credits on Pass/Fail, limited to one course per semester and three total, choosing by the 11th week. Pass/Fail credit works only as a free elective, does not affect your GPA, and a Pass/Fail grade below C makes you ineligible for the Dean's List that semester. Some schools ban the option outright — the School of Business allows no Pass/Fail at all.
