Academic policies at Yale

Graduating with honors

HonorBasisMinimum GPA
Summa cum laudeNo more than the top 5% of the class
Magna cum laudeNo more than the next 10%
Cum laudeNo more than the next 15%

Yale awards General Honors by class percentile rather than a fixed GPA, with at most 30% of each graduating class receiving a Latin honor. The ranking uses your Yale-only GPA, and Credit/D/Fail courses are excluded. Distinction in the Major is awarded separately by each department.

Dean's List

Yale College's academic regulations make no mention of a Dean's List.

Good academic standing

Yale does not define good standing by GPA. You accumulate course credits on a schedule — at least 8 credits after two terms, 16 after four, and 26 after six — and you fall out of good standing if you earn three F grades in one term, or F grades in two out of three successive terms.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

Yale's Credit/D/Fail option converts a grade of C− or better into a CR that does not affect your GPA, while grades of D+ and below still post and count as given. You can use it for up to 4 credits per year and 2 per term, capped at 6 credits toward your degree.
