Academic policies at UIC

Graduating with honors

These University Honors bands — 3.50–3.74 cum laude, 3.75–3.89 magna, 3.90 and above summa — are based on your UIC GPA at the end of the term before graduation, then finalised once your last grades post. Your college may separately award General College Honors to its top 15% of graduates, and departments award their own distinction levels.

Dean's List

UIC requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. UIC's Dean's List is awarded by each college rather than university-wide, but the colleges that publish criteria — Architecture Design and the Arts, Pharmacy, and Engineering — all use a 3.50 term GPA. The course-load minimum varies, from 9 graded hours in CADA to 12 in Pharmacy and Engineering.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need at least a 2.00 GPA both cumulatively and in your UIC coursework. A term below 2.00 while your cumulative holds puts you on term notice; a cumulative below 2.00 puts you on academic notice — UIC's terms for probation.

Repeating a course

If you are short of the GPA you need to graduate, your college can apply the Undergraduate GPA Recalculation Policy, excluding up to four D or F grades one course at a time until you meet the requirement. You cannot request this yourself — only your college can initiate it. Separately, you may repeat a D or F once without special permission.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

UIC calls this the credit/no credit option. You can take up to 21 semester hours this way, one course per term, only in good standing, and never for a course required for your major including prerequisites. Elect it by the tenth day of instruction; grades of A–D convert to CR and an F becomes NC, neither counting toward your GPA.
