These are the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences bands. Cutoffs are recalculated every year from June graduates' GPAs and apply through the following March, and Northwestern does not release the exact GPA numbers, citing FERPA. Northwestern's other undergraduate schools — McCormick, Medill, Bienen, SESP, and Communication — set their own criteria, so check with your school.
Dean's List
Northwestern requires a term GPA of at least 3.70. This is the Weinberg College threshold: at least a 3.70 GPA in the previous quarter across at least three courses taken for a regular letter grade. It is awarded each Fall, Winter, and Spring quarter and is not noted on your permanent record. Other Northwestern schools set their own thresholds.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. In Weinberg College, probation can be triggered by two or more grades below C in a quarter, a cumulative GPA below 2.00 for sophomores and above, falling behind on course-completion pace, or failing to maintain a C average in your major.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Northwestern calls this Pass/No Credit. The deadline is the Friday of the eighth week of the quarter, it is limited to general-education or unrestricted-elective courses tagged Student Option, and per-school caps apply — Weinberg allows at most six P grades toward graduation, one per quarter, while McCormick allows up to eight.
Policies vary sharply by school
Northwestern devolves Latin honors, Dean's List, and Pass/No Credit limits to each undergraduate school rather than setting one university-wide number. Check your own school's rules rather than assuming Weinberg's apply to you.
