Dean's List

Iowa requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a 3.5 or higher semester GPA across at least 12 Iowa-graded semester hours, with no Incomplete or missing grades that term.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Once you have earned 30 or more semester hours you need a 2.00 cumulative GPA, or 1.85 if you have fewer than 30 hours, plus at least a 1.50 in any single term. Falling short places you on academic probation.

Repeating a course

Iowa's Second-Grade-Only option lets you repeat up to three courses, once each, across your undergraduate career, with only the second grade counting toward your GPA though both remain visible on your transcript. Some graduate programs still consider your original grades when recomputing GPA.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

Pass/Nonpass grades are excluded from your GPA and from graded semester hours. You elect the option by the deadline on the academic calendar, but which courses qualify and any credit-hour limits depend on your college.
