Dean's List
USC requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You qualify in any semester where you have a declared major, complete 12 or more units of letter-graded coursework, and earn a term GPA of 3.5 or higher. The Dean's List does not appear on your official transcript.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Falling below a 2.0 overall USC GPA places you on academic notice, USC's current term for probation, and you must clear your course selections with an academic counselor each semester. You then have two semesters to return to a 2.0 or face disqualification.
Repeating a course
USC offers no blanket grade forgiveness — repeating a course generally leaves both grades counted in your GPA. You cannot repeat a course for GPA credit if you already earned a B− or better. With a C+, C, or C−, only the new grade counts if you petition the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures before re-registering. First-time freshmen get one exception: up to three courses graded D+ or below from your first two semesters.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
USC calls this Pass/No Pass. A P, equivalent to a C− or better, and an NP both leave your GPA untouched. You can apply at most 24 units of Pass/No Pass coursework toward your degree, with at most 4 counting toward general education.
USC truncates your GPA rather than rounding
USC uses a 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades but awards no A+, and your GPA is truncated rather than rounded. A 3.4999 is therefore a 3.49, not a 3.50 — which matters directly at the cum laude line.
