Academic policies at Vanderbilt

Graduating with honors

Vanderbilt recalculates these cutoffs every June for the coming year, separately for each school, to three decimal places without rounding. For the Summer 2026 to Spring 2027 cycle the cum laude threshold alone ranged from about 3.864 to 3.930 depending on school — so there is no single campus-wide GPA, and this year's number does not carry over to the next.

Dean's List

Vanderbilt requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. This is the School of Engineering criterion: at least a 3.5 GPA across a minimum of 12 credit hours taken for a letter grade, with no F grades and no temporary or missing grades. The College of Arts and Science excludes students on a reduced course load but does not publish its own numeric cutoff.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Arts and Science students must earn at least 12 credit hours per semester and keep at least a 1.500 GPA to avoid probation, with sophomore standing itself requiring a 1.800. Engineering sets a higher bar of 1.80 for first-year students and 2.0 thereafter.

Repeating a course

Vanderbilt allows grade replacement for repeated courses: your latest grade is the one used in your GPA, though the original stays visible on your transcript. Engineering will not let you retake a course for replacement if you already earned a B− or better, and Arts and Science lets you repeat a passed course only once.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

No more than 18 credit hours taken Pass/Fail can count toward your degree, and only one course per term. A grade of D− or better converts to a P with no GPA impact, while an F stays an F and is calculated into your GPA.
