WashU's system is unusual: GPA alone does not qualify you. To enter the Latin Honors candidate pool in Arts and Sciences you need a GPA of 3.65 or better plus acceptance into your department's honors track, extra coursework, a project, and often an exam. Only within that qualifying pool are the three bands assigned by rank. Transfer students need at least 48 letter-graded WashU units.
Dean's List
WashU requires a term GPA of at least 3.60. You need a 3.6 or higher GPA in a semester with at least 14 quality-graded units and no outstanding Incomplete or N grades, with all work finished by the first day of the next semester.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. A 2.0 minimum semester and cumulative GPA is required both to stay in good standing and to graduate. Falling below results in Academic Notice.
Repeating a course
When you retake a course designed to be taken once, both attempts stay on your transcript with the earlier marked R, but only the higher grade is used to calculate your GPA and count toward credit.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Arts and Sciences undergraduates may take one course per semester Pass/No Pass, up to 24 credits toward the degree, with at least 96 credits still letter-graded. No more than 12 of those can satisfy area distribution requirements, it almost never counts for a major or minor, and you must lock in the basis by the end of week 12.
