Academic policies at Temple

Graduating with honors

Temple sets a separate GPA cut-off for each school or college so that roughly 2% of graduates earn summa, 5% magna, and 9% cum laude. Cut-offs are recalculated on a rolling schedule from the prior five years of graduates — for August 2025 through May 2026 graduates they ran about 3.88–4.00 for summa, 3.77–3.98 for magna, and 3.59–3.95 for cum laude depending on college. You also need at least 60 credits completed at Temple.

Dean's List

Temple sets a separate dean's list cut-off each semester for every school or college, targeting the top 16% of that college's GPAs over the previous five fall and spring semesters. For fall 2025 and spring 2026 the cut-offs ranged from 3.81 to 4.00 depending on your college. You need at least 12 graded credits in the semester.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Falling below a 2.00 cumulative or term GPA triggers academic warning, then probation once you have attempted 24 or more credits or finished your fourth term, and can lead to dismissal if your GPA stays under 2.00 after that.

Repeating a course

If you repeat a course, only your highest grade counts toward your GPA, though every attempt stays on your transcript. You can attempt a course up to three times, with the third needing your school's approval, and you earn no extra credit for repeating a course you already passed.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

Temple calls this Credit/No Credit. You can apply it to up to four non-General-Education courses total, one per semester, and you must be in good academic standing to use it. CR means C− or better, CD covers the D range, and NC is F-equivalent; none affect your GPA, but a CD or NC will not satisfy a prerequisite requiring a C− or higher.
