Academic policies at Cornell
Graduating with honors
Cornell sets Latin honors college by college, and the system is mid-overhaul. Starting with the December 2026 conferral, Cornell moves to a standardized percentile system — summa cum laude for the top 5%, magna cum laude for the next 10%, and cum laude for the next 15% — computed separately for each college, replacing the per-department honors used through Summer 2026. There is no single fixed GPA, so check your own college's registrar for your graduation year.
Dean's List
Cornell is discontinuing the Dean's List entirely at the end of Spring 2026, and it already does not apply to students who matriculated in Summer 2023 or later. Historically the cutoff varied by college — roughly 3.6 in Arts and Sciences, 3.5 in Engineering, and 3.7 in Human Ecology — so there was never one Cornell-wide number.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Most Cornell colleges require at least a 2.0 semester GPA and 12 completed credits to remain in good standing. Architecture, Art, and Planning sets a higher 2.3 semester bar while enrolled, though it still only requires a 2.0 cumulative GPA to graduate.
Repeating a course
Cornell does not offer grade forgiveness. If you repeat a course, both grades stay on your transcript and both count in your GPA — a retake adds a second data point rather than erasing the first.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
S/U grades are excluded from your GPA entirely, with S corresponding to work that would have earned a C− or better. You must elect S/U before the end of the course's drop period, and each college sets its own limit on how many S/U credits can count toward graduation.
