Academic policies at UB

Graduating with honors

HonorMinimum cumulative GPA
Cum laude3.20
Magna cum laude3.50
Summa cum laude3.75

These apply to your final UB cumulative GPA with no rounding. You also need at least 60 UB undergraduate credit hours, at least 54 of them graded rather than pass/no pass or S/U.

Dean's List

UB requires a term GPA of at least 3.60. You need at least 12 UB letter-graded credit hours as a full-time undergraduate in a fall or spring semester. Only UB coursework counts — not transfer or cross-registration credit — and an Incomplete holds up the award until it is resolved.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You are in good standing if both your cumulative UB GPA and your most recent semester GPA are 2.000 or higher. One low semester while your cumulative holds puts you on academic warning; two consecutive, or too large a quality-point deficit, moves you to probation or dismissal.

Repeating a course

UB's Repeat Policy lets you retake almost any course, and the earlier attempt's grade and credits drop out of your GPA and credit totals — even if the new grade is lower, so weigh that before retaking. You can self-enroll in a repeat up to twice; a third attempt needs department approval.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

UB calls this S/U grading. You can request it for eligible elective courses by the resign deadline, and no more than 25% of your total UB credits can be S/U. A C or better becomes an S. S/U grades are excluded from your GPA, Dean's List, and Latin honors calculations, though you can later recover the letter grade if you want it to count.

Program Distinction in your major

Separate from university-wide Latin honors, many majors award their own Program Distinction based on your GPA within that major: With Distinction at 3.20–3.49, With High Distinction at 3.50–3.74, and With Highest Distinction at 3.75 and above. Departments can also award Program Honors for an honors thesis or project.
