Academic policies at Stanford
Graduating with honors
Stanford does not award traditional Latin honors to undergraduates. Instead the top 15% of each graduating class by cumulative GPA, calculated through Winter Quarter of the graduating year, receives a Bachelor's Degree with Distinction, noted on the diploma and transcript. Stanford does not rank students or publish the exact GPA cutoff. Departments separately offer honors in the major, usually requiring a thesis, which is independent of university-wide Distinction.
Dean's List
Stanford does not maintain a university-wide Dean's List. Recognition comes instead through Bachelor's Degree with Distinction at graduation and department-level honors in the major.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, plus at least 9 units per quarter and at least 36 units over your most recent three quarters, to remain in satisfactory standing. Falling short triggers Academic Notice, then Probation, and eventually Suspension.
Repeating a course
If you retake a course, the second attempt's grade and units replace the first attempt's in your cumulative GPA, though both attempts remain on your transcript. A third attempt requires approval from the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Stanford offers Credit grading, equivalent to a C− or better to earn credit, and Satisfactory/No Credit grading in courses an instructor designates. Neither CR nor S affects your GPA, and NC earns no degree credit and also does not affect GPA.
