Academic policies at Syracuse

Graduating with honors

These use your cumulative Syracuse GPA calculated from at least 60 letter-graded credit hours taken at SU, and no rounding up is allowed — a 3.399 does not reach cum laude. School of Architecture students face a lower bar: 3.200 for cum laude and 3.500 for magna, with summa at 3.800 either way.

Dean's List

Syracuse uses no campus-wide cutoff — each school sets its own semester GPA minimum across at least 12 letter-graded credit hours with no missing or incomplete grades, generally between 3.200 and 3.700. The Whitman School of Management requires 3.600 and Arts and Sciences 3.400, while the School of Information Studies adds a higher Distinguished Dean's List tier at 3.8.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA to stay in good standing. Each school sets its own probation stages — Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School use a two-step Academic Probation then Final Probation sequence — so check your own school's policy.

Repeating a course

Syracuse calls this flagging. If you retake a course you have already taken at SU, the retake's grade and credits normally count toward your GPA — your school decides whether the newer or the higher grade is used — while both attempts stay on your transcript. You can flag a given course at most twice. Returning after 7 or more years away with a GPA under 2.0 may also qualify you for Academic Renewal.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

You can take up to 24 credit hours toward your degree pass/fail, though your school may cap it lower — Whitman allows just one per semester, and Arts and Sciences and Maxwell will not let you use it for Liberal Arts Core, major, or minor courses. Grades of A through D convert to a P with no GPA effect, but an F still counts against you.
