Duke sets Latin honors by class percentile rather than a fixed GPA, using the spring term's cumulative GPA distribution, and does not publish the resulting numeric cutoff — ask the Registrar for your class's figure. Duke's separate Graduation with Distinction is a thesis-based honor and is not the same thing.
Dean's List
Trinity College students need at least four course credits in the semester with a GPA in the top third of the class, or the top 10% for Dean's List with Distinction. First-year students are not eligible. The Pratt School of Engineering uses the same top-third and top-10% bands.
Good academic standing
Duke's continuation requirements are credit-based rather than GPA-based — at least 2.0 course credits in your first semester, rising to 3.0 per semester after that. Probation is triggered by accumulating D and F/U grades in a semester, and you clear it by earning at least a 2.0 semester average with no grade below C−.
Repeating a course
Duke does not forgive grades. If you repeat a course, both attempts stay on your transcript and both count in your GPA, though only one attempt's credit counts toward the 34 course credits required to graduate.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Only four S/U course credits can count toward graduation, limited to one per semester. An S covers anything from C− to A+ and a U covers D+ to F. Once you elect S/U for a course you cannot switch back to a letter grade.
An A+ is capped at 4.0
Duke's scale gives an A+ the same 4.0 grade points as a plain A. There is no bonus for the plus, so you cannot bank surplus points against a weaker grade elsewhere.
