Academic policies at NC State
Graduating with honors
| Honor | Minimum cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.25 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.50 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.75 |
NC State's bands are 3.250–3.499 cum laude, 3.500–3.749 magna cum laude, and 3.750 and above summa cum laude. You must complete at least two semesters and at least 30 credit hours at NC State to be eligible.
Dean's List
NC State requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You qualify with a semester average of 3.5 or better on 12 to 14 credit hours, or 3.25 or better on 15 or more credit hours, of coursework earning grade points. An F, U, or IN grade that semester makes you ineligible regardless of your average.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. A cumulative GPA below 2.0 with a grade-point deficit of 15 or less places you on Academic Warning, and you must earn at least a 2.0 term GPA every subsequent term until you recover. A deficit greater than 15 results in Academic Suspension.
Repeating a course
NC State's Undergraduate Grade Exclusion policy lets you select up to two courses with a posted grade of C− or below to be excluded from your cumulative GPA, though excluded courses cannot satisfy degree requirements. You may otherwise repeat a course once without permission if your original grade was below a D+; without grade exclusion, all attempts count in your GPA.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
In Credit-Only courses an S requires work equivalent to a C− or better. Neither an S nor a U counts toward your GPA, though an S counts toward cumulative hours attempted. Undergraduates may count a maximum of 12 credit-only hours toward graduation, and these courses do not count toward Dean's List eligibility.
