Academic policies at UNC
Graduating with honors

UNC does not use Latin naming. You graduate with Distinction at a 3.500 cumulative GPA or with Highest Distinction at 3.800, and either way you need at least 45 academic hours completed at UNC-Chapel Hill. Separately, "with Honors" or "with Highest Honors" is awarded for completing a six-credit senior honors thesis, which requires at least a 3.300 cumulative GPA to begin and is independent of the Distinction levels.
Dean's List
UNC requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need at least a 3.500 GPA in the semester with no grade lower than a C, while enrolled in at least 12 hours of letter-grade credit. Physical education activity courses and pass/fail hours do not count toward that 12-hour minimum.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need a cumulative UNC GPA of at least 2.000, along with separate completion-rate and maximum-time-frame standards. Falling short moves you to Warning, then Suspension if you do not recover.
Repeating a course
If you retake a course that is not designated repeatable, only one attempt counts toward your degree credit hours — the higher passing grade, or the most recent if they tie. This is not true grade replacement: every attempt's grade still counts in your cumulative GPA, so a retake does not erase the earlier grade.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Electing Pass/Fail gets you a PS if you earned an A through C, or LP for a C−, D+, or D; neither affects your GPA though you still earn the credit hours. A failure posts as an F and counts against your GPA like any other. You may take one course Pass/Fail per semester and no more than 23 credit hours across your undergraduate career, and the choice is final once submitted.
