Academic policies at George Mason

Graduating with honors

HonorMinimum cumulative GPA
Cum laude3.50
Magna cum laude3.70
Summa cum laude3.90

Latin honors require at least 60 undergraduate credits earned at Mason itself — AP and credit-by-exam credit do not count toward that 60. If you have 45 to 59 Mason credits instead, a GPA of 3.80 or higher earns Graduation with Recognition rather than a Latin honors title.

Dean's List

George Mason requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a 3.50 or better semester GPA across at least 6 credits, with no grade below a C. If you later repeat and exclude a course, it does not retroactively erase a Dean's List term you already earned.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. A cumulative GPA below 2.00 puts you on Academic Warning first, then Academic Probation if you are still under 2.00 after a warning term. Continued shortfalls can lead to suspension or permanent dismissal.

Repeating a course

If you return to Mason after being away at least three years, you can petition for Academic Clemency to remove up to 16 credits' worth of prior grades from your cumulative GPA. You must file within 12 months of re-enrolling, and approval is not automatic.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

Some courses can be taken Satisfactory/No Credit instead of for a letter grade. Undergraduates need C-level work or better to earn the S, and neither S nor NC affects your GPA.
