Academic policies at UVA

Distinction (with thesis)Distinguished Majors thesis3.40
Distinction (no thesis)GPA alone, no thesis required3.60

UVA's College of Arts and Sciences does not use cum laude, magna, or summa naming. The top three tiers all require completing a Distinguished Majors Program with a written thesis at a 3.400 minimum, and your department — not a GPA table — decides which tier you receive. Separately, a 3.600 earns plain Distinction without a thesis. Other UVA schools set their own criteria.

Dean's List

UVA requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. In Arts and Sciences you need a current GPA of at least 3.500 across a minimum of 15 graded credits, with no F, NC, or NG grades. Other UVA schools differ sharply: Architecture, Education, Nursing, and Batten require 3.70 or higher, Engineering 3.40, and McIntire Commerce 3.75.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 1.80 to stay in good academic standing. Arts and Sciences requires a 1.800 minimum GPA for full-time students, which is lower than most peers. Falling below results in Academic Warning, and two consecutive Warning semesters — or failing to earn at least 9 grade points after one — leads to suspension.

Repeating a course

If you repeat a course you originally earned a D+, D, D−, or F in, only the higher of the two grades counts toward your GPA. This applies to just the first 9 credits of repeats, both attempts must be letter-graded UVA courses, and the repeat must be no earlier than Fall 2025. Repeating a course you already passed with a C− or better adds credit hours but no GPA relief.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

The Credit/No Credit option is capped at two courses per semester, with total caps depending on when you entered — 24 credits for entering first-years, tapering to 12 for third-year transfers. It cannot be used for general-education, major, or minor requirements, requires instructor permission, and must be selected before the add deadline.
