Graduating with honors
| Honor | Minimum cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.40 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.60 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.80 |

Dean's List
Virginia Tech requires a term GPA of at least 3.40. You need to attempt at least 12 credit hours, all graded on the standard A–F scale, and earn a 3.4 GPA for that fall or spring semester. Virginia Tech does not compile a Dean's List for summer sessions.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Falling below a 2.00 cumulative GPA places you on academic probation, noted on your transcript, and it is lifted once you return to 2.00. Two consecutive fall or spring semesters on probation without reaching 2.00 means you must earn at least a 2.50 term GPA each semester to avoid suspension.
Repeating a course
Repeating a course you earned a C− or below in usually leaves both grades in your GPA, though once the repeat is passed with a C or better one recorded grade is adjusted to an RP notation. You are capped at three total attempts of any course before being dropped and having to petition, so check with your advisor about how a specific repeat affects your GPA.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Once you have completed 30 credit hours at Virginia Tech with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, you can take up to 12 credit hours Pass/Fail, no more than two courses per term. Required and Pathways General Education courses do not qualify, you earn a P for a D or better, and once taken Pass/Fail a course cannot be retaken for a letter grade.
