Academic policies at IU
Graduating with honors
| Honor | Basis | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Highest Distinction | Roughly the top 3% of the class | — |
| High Distinction | Roughly the top 6% | — |
| Distinction | Roughly the top 10% | — |
IU Bloomington sets no campus-wide Latin honors policy. In the College of Arts and Sciences these are called Distinction, High Distinction, and Highest Distinction rather than the Latin titles, and the GPA cutoff is recalculated every year from the top 10%, 6%, and 3% of the prior three graduating classes. You need at least 60 graded credit hours at IU to be eligible. Other IU schools, such as Kelley, use their own criteria.
Dean's List
IU requires a term GPA of at least 3.70. In the College of Arts and Sciences you make the Executive Dean's List with a term GPA of 3.700 or higher across at least 12 credit hours of regularly graded College coursework, while in good academic standing. Other IU schools set their own thresholds.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You are in Good Academic Standing if both your cumulative and semester GPA are at least 2.000. A semester GPA below that places you on Academic Watch; a cumulative GPA below it places you on Academic Alert, and failing to recover by the end of the next semester can mean dismissal.
Repeating a course
IU's X Grade Replacement policy lets you retake up to 3 courses, or 10 credit hours, whichever is less, with only the retake grade counting toward your GPA — the original is marked X on your transcript and excluded. Separately, Fresh Start academic renewal removes all prior grades from your GPA if you are readmitted after at least 3 years away, and can be used only once across all IU campuses.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
If you earn a D− or better under Pass/Fail you get credit and a P that does not affect your GPA. An F earned under the pass/fail option still posts and is calculated into your GPA. Eligibility and credit limits vary by degree program.
An A+ is worth the same as an A
IU Bloomington's scale sets both A+ and A at 4.0, with A− at 3.7, B+ at 3.3, and so on down to F at 0.0.
