Graduating with honors
| Honor | Basis | Minimum GPA |

| Highest Distinction | Top 30% of Distinction qualifiers | — |
Purdue does not use cum laude / magna / summa naming — it awards Distinction and Highest Distinction by rank within your own college. The GPA cutoff is recalculated every term and differs by college: for May 2026 graduates it ran about 3.94 in Science, 3.89 in Engineering, and 3.83 in the Daniels School of Business, with 3.98 for Highest Distinction. Treat those as a snapshot and check the commencement eligibility page for your term.
Dean's List
Purdue requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA on a minimum of 12 GPA hours, plus at least a 3.0 current-semester GPA on a minimum of 6 semester hours. If you clear a 3.5 semester GPA but hold only a 2.0 cumulative GPA, you qualify for Semester Honors instead.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You stay in good standing as long as both your semester and cumulative GPA sit at or above 2.0. Dropping below in either at the end of a fall or spring semester places you on Academic Notice, Purdue's term for probation.
Repeating a course
If you repeat the same or an equivalent course at any Purdue campus, the repeat replaces the earlier grade for GPA purposes — though transfer credit from another institution does not replace a Purdue grade. You are limited to three attempts at a given course, and a withdrawal counts as an attempt. A fourth attempt requires petitioning your college.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Under Pass/Not Pass, a grade of C− or higher earns a P and anything below earns an N. Both are excluded entirely from every GPA calculation. You cannot use it for courses required by your major or minor, and usage is capped at two courses per academic year and no more than 20% of your degree.
