Graduating with honors
| Honor | Basis | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Summa cum laude | Top 5% within your college | — |
| Magna cum laude | Top 15% | — |
| Cum laude | Top 30% | — |
Notre Dame sets Latin honors by GPA percentile within each undergraduate college, recalculated every February by the Registrar, with January, May, and August graduates in the same calendar year using the same cutoffs. Students who entered before Fall 2001 used fixed thresholds of 3.400, 3.600, and 3.800 — a legacy system that no longer applies.
Dean's List
Notre Dame calls this Dean's Honors, a semester-based recognition separate from Latin honors. Each college sets its own GPA cutoff annually, targeting roughly the top 30% of that college's students based on the prior year's grades, and you need at least 12 graded credit hours to be eligible.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Beyond your first semester you need at least a 2.000 semester GPA, with first-semester first-years held to a lower 1.850. Missing it once means Academic Warning, missing it again means Academic Probation. You are dismissed after two consecutive or three total warning semesters, or immediately if any semester average falls below 1.000.
Repeating a course
Notre Dame only lets you repeat a course you failed, or with your dean's approval one you earned a D in — you cannot retake a course passed with a C− or better just to replace the grade. When you do repeat, both grades count in your GPA and only one attempt counts toward your degree.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
The Pass/Fail option only opens up the summer after your sophomore year. You can take one such course per semester, up to four total, and only outside your declared major or minor. It cannot be used for core or college requirements, and once elected it is irreversible. An A through D becomes a P with no GPA effect; an F still counts against you.
